However, as we celebrate this glorious past, we must also confront our present. Independence is a living, breathing concept. It did not end when the foreign rulers left. True independence means the freedom from hunger, the freedom from fear, the freedom from ignorance, and the freedom from discrimination. A nation cannot be truly great if half of its population is held back by inequality, or if its youth are trapped by a lack of opportunity.
