Subhash Chandra Bose Subhas Chandra Bose, affectionately known as Netaji ("Respected Leader"), was a pivotal and revolutionary Indian nationalist leader who led an armed struggle against British colonial rule during World War II. Born on 23 January 1897 in Cuttack, Odisha, he is globally recognized for defying British authority, establishing the Provisional Government of Free India, and revitalizing the Indian National Army (INA) or Azad Hind Fauj. His famous, fiery slogan, "Give me blood, and I promise you freedom!" remains a definitive call to patriotism in Indian history. Early Life and Brilliant Education Birth: Born into a wealthy family to prominent lawyer Janakinath Bose and Prabhavati Devi. Inspirations: Heavily influenced by the spiritual and patriotic teachings of Swami Vivekananda. Academic Excellence: Graduated with a philosophy degree from Scottish Church College, Calcutta in 1919. Civil Services: Cleared the prestigious Indian Civil Services (ICS) exam in England in 1920. Resignation: Resigned from his post in 1921, refusing to serve the British Raj after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Entry into Indian Politics Mentorship: Joined the Indian National Congress (INC) under the guidance of political leader Chittaranjan Das. Leadership Roles: Served as the Mayor of Calcutta and emerged as a popular youth leader. Congress Presidency: Elected INC President in 1938 (Haripura) and re-elected in 1939 (Tripuri). Ideological Rift: Clashed with Mahatma Gandhi over economic planning and Gandhi's strict non-violent methods. Resignation & Forward Bloc: Resigned from the INC presidency in 1939 to form the All India Forward Bloc.
