Mahatma [Mohandas Karamchand] Gandhi (October 2, 1869 – January 30, 1948) was an Indian lawyer and political leader. He led India's freedom movement against British rule using nonviolent civil disobedience. Honored globally as an apostle of peace, he is widely remembered in India as the Father of the Nation. Early Life and Education * Born in Porbandar, Gujarat, to Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai. * Traveled to London, England, in 1888 to study law at the [Inner Temple](0.6.1, 0.6.9). * Returned to India in 1891 as a trained lawyer. * Moved to South Africa in 1893, where he faced racial discrimination and fought for civil rights. Freedom Struggle Contributions * Returned to India in 1915 and joined the Indian National Congress (INC). *Launched the nationwide Non-Cooperation Movement in 1920 to boycott British goods and institutions. * Led the famous Salt March (Salt Satyagraha) in 1930 against unfair salt taxes. * Spearheaded the Quit India Movement in 1942, demanding an immediate end to British rule.
