Story - After Paris Part 1: Mayfair The rain in London didn’t wash away memories; it only made them heavier. For 5 years, Clara had managed to bury the ghost of Julian beneath a mountain of architectural blueprints and lukewarm coffee. But tonight, standing in a crowded gallery in Mayfair, her breath caught. Across the room, under the warm glow of a spotlight, hung a massive oil painting. It was a flawless rendering of a messy kitchen table, two half-empty mugs, and a single, wilted peony in a cracked glass vase. It was their old apartment in Paris. It was the exact morning he walked out. "It's called The Cost of Leaving," a voice murmured beside her. Clara didn’t need to look up to know who it was. The deep, slightly gravelly timbre belonged to the man who had promised her forever before choosing art over their shared life. She turned slowly, her heart hammering against her ribs. Julian looked older. There were faint lines around his eyes and a quiet exhaustion in his posture, but his gaze was just as intense as the day they met. "You always did like drama," Clara said, her voice tighter than she intended. "Is this what our life was to you? Canvas space?" Julian flinched, a flash of genuine pain crossing his face. "It was the only way I knew how to talk to you when you stopped answering my calls, Clara. I spent years trying to paint you back into my world." "You pushed me out of it, Julian. You chose a fellowship in Rome over our life." "I was terrified," Julian stepped closer, the scent of rain and oil paint radiating off him. "I thought if I didn't prove myself then, I'd never be worthy of the future we talked about. It was a mistake. The biggest one of my life." Clara looked from him back to the painting. The raw emotion trapped in brushstrokes was undeniable. It was a visual apology, signed in the corner with his name. For five years, she had nursed her anger like a shield. Now, looking at him, the shield felt incredibly heavy. For more see comments...

"I'm engaged, Julian," she lied, the words tasting like ash. Julian froze. The hope that had briefly sparked in his eyes extinguished instantly. He swallowed hard, nodding slowly as he forced a tight, polite smile. "Then... he is a very lucky man. I'm glad you found the stability I couldn't give you." He handed her a small, cream-colored card from his jacket pocket. "The exhibition runs all week. If you ever want to talk—just as old friends—I'm staying at the hotel across the street."
