The Midnight Express to Nowhere The rain hit the windows of train like handfuls of gravel. Elena pulled her coat tighter, her eyes fixed on empty seat across from her. On it, sat a leather briefcase. It belonged to the man who had vanished into the restroom 40 mins ago. The train was a night express cutting through the Swiss Alps. Only three other passengers shared the carriage: an elderly woman knitting a gray scarf, a man asleep with his hat over his face, and the conductor who hadn't been seen since the last station. Elena looked down at her watch. 11:14 PM. The man in the restroom had been nervous. He had spent the first two hours of the journey sweating, glancing at his reflection, and tapping his fingers against the worn leather of the case. When he finally stood up, he leaned toward her. His breath had smelled of stale coffee. "If I am not back in five minutes," he had whispered, "do not let anyone touch this." Elena had smiled politely, assuming it was paranoia. Now, forty minutes later, the air in the carriage felt heavy, suffocating. The lights overhead flickered. They died completely for three agonizing seconds, leaving the cabin in pitch blackness, before buzzing back to a dim, sickly yellow. Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. She looked toward the heavy metal door at the end of the aisle that led to the restroom. It remained firmly shut. She stood up. Her legs felt hollow. Step by step, she moved down the aisle. The rhythmic clack-clack of the train tracks seemed to slow down, mimicking a heavy heartbeat. The elderly woman didn't look up from her knitting. The sleeping man didn't move. She reached the restroom door. The indicator dial read Occupied in fading red letters. She knocked. "Hello? Is everything alright in there?" No answer. Only the roar of the wind underneath the train cars. She tried the handle. It didn't budge. She knocked harder, the metal cold against her knuckles. "Sir?" #story #suspense #thriller For more - see comment!

Story Telling@Story · 14 Aug 2026, 4:40 amSuddenly, the train lurched violently to the left. Elena grabbed the handrail to steady herself. As she did, her foot slid on something slick. She looked down. A thin, dark ribbon of liquid was slowly creeping out from beneath the restroom door, tracing the groove of the metal floorboards. In the dim yellow light, it looked black. But when she knelt and touched it with a trembling fingertip, it was warm and bright red. Elena gasped, stumbling backward.
